Just See How God has Gifted Us

“Now about spiritual gifts, (siblings), I do not want you to be ignorant.
… to each (of you) the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
… (together,) you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”
(I Corinthians 12:1, 7, 27)

How cool it is that we are in the year 2020!  In January I spoke of the hope that we would have 20/20 vision concerning the “fine print” of what God is calling us, as Christians, to do and to be.  This month I would like to put a spotlight on what is known as “Spiritual Gifts” so we may see them clearly.

Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by the Holy Spirit and distributed to every believer according to God’s design and grace for the common good of the body of Christ.  I know that is a mouthful! In other words, when we accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, He sends His Holy Spirit to uniquely empower each of us so that we can fulfill whatever purpose He may have for us.  Then, when we put all of our unique “gifts” together and use them in concert, we become stronger and stronger!

Most Christians have heard of spiritual gifts.  Relatively few know what they actually are. Far fewer yet have actually taken the time to investigate the gifts, to discern what their personal gift(s) might be, and then to learn how to use it (them).  I don’t want anyone in this family of faith to be among the latter group!

My February 9 message will be about the spiritual gifts.  Then, during Lent (begins Feb. 26), I will lead a six-week class that will help participants come to know their particular gifts.  The day and time of the class will be selected by mutual agreement of those who wish to participate. Please sign up in the office.

A couple more important bits of news:

The “Lenten Season” is the 40 days (minus Sundays) leading up to Easter.  Historically, Christians use this season to consider the need for personal repentance from sin so that their hearts may be restored to a right relationship with God.

Something new:  Lent begins on a day known as “Ash Wednesday.” (Again, Feb. 26)  We will hold an Ash Wednesday service in our sanctuary that day at 5 p.m.  All are encouraged to attend as we enter the Lenten season.

Finally, my February 16 message will be an important one that I hope no one will miss.  I will be starting a sermon series concerning what are known as the “Marks of a Disciple.”  The “Marks” are six characteristics (or qualities) a disciplined disciple will build upon as they grow in faith.  This series has been scheduled during the Lenten season very intentionally! Knowing these marks will give us new tools we can use to grow deeper in our relationship with our Lord.

Blessings!  Pastor Bill
